Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I buy the game yet?

Not yet. We are nearing the end of the play testing phase for this game. Once we are confident the game is the best it can be, Shots Across America will go through a crowdfunding campaign that will allow us to mass produce it. Stay tuned for updates!

How many players can play?

The game flows well enough with 3 or 4 players, but functions best with 5 or more. The most fun is had when players are able to challenge one another, and challenges are more common when there are more players. The game provides 8 game pieces, but gameplay could technically support more if you can fit them at the table. 10 would likely be the maximum.

How long is the average game?

The rate of play is pretty quick. Turns can take one second, or more rarely, a minute or two if a more complex challenge is drawn. An average game lasts about 30-45 minutes, but games can potentially finish sooner. As consecutive games are played and people lose the ability to focus or get lost in conversation, play time can take longer. This is a good thing, because it gives people more time to sober up.

Can I add on to the base game?

At this time, there are 15 themed expansions available for the game, each containing 4 new executive orders, 6 scenario challenges, and 5 trivia challenges. Expansions come bundled in sets of 3 for your convenience. All 15 expansions will be available at game launch.

Can I try out the game before deciding to back it?

If you are in the Kalamazoo / Portage area of southwest Michigan, the game creators will be hosting a handful of play testing sessions at various pubs, breweries, and gaming locations that anyone is welcome to join. Contact us if you’re interested!

Do I have to drink while playing this game?

No! While the game does provide many prompts for players to drink, drinking rules are completely up to your own discretion and that of your playing group. It’s easy to still have fun playing Shots Across America while staying sober. Always remember: The type, amount, and content of alcohol used in this game should be decided solely by the players. The definition of a “shot” is up to you and is not limited to standard dictionary definitions of the word.

I can’t handle shots. What should I do?

“Shots” is meant to be interpreted loosely. Most people have their own mixed drink, beer, or seltzer at hand, and drink from that whenever a “shot” gets assigned. When playing with friends at bars and breweries, it’s fun to get a flight of shots and play “Flights Across America” instead. It’s up to the players to drink responsibly, and most people understand that shots can build up quickly and can turn to disaster quickly. The freedom is yours to choose.

Does the game come with shot glasses?

10 clear plastic shot cups are provided with the game (1x2oz. + 9×1 oz.) These cups function best as placeholder game pieces that do not necessarily need to be filled with liquids.

Should I pour shots before placing them on the board?

It is highly recommended that you do not pour out the shots beforehand, as you will risk (guarantee) spilling on the board. Either leave the shots empty and pour them just before they are consumed, or better yet, always leave them empty and pour shots outside of the placeholder pieces used in the game. Most players find the most hygienic and easiest option is to drink out of their own containers while playing, especially when playing multiple games.

How long has this game been in development?

Development for this game started in the mid 2010’s and active play testing has been going on since 2017. In 2024, we decided to kick things into gear! Read more about the game’s development on the About page.

Do you have any more games in the works?

We have some pretty good ideas for more games, but we’ll be focusing primarily on developing Shots Across America until it releases.
